CLASS DESCRIPTION

  • BEGINNING CLAY, THE BASICS
    Monday 10am with Nan Wollman - Beginners

    Never touched clay? Potters wheel looks intriguing? Haven't had a clay class since school, and you're ready to try again? Novices or need a 'refresher'? 

    All are welcome to beginning clay! We will start with the basics of throwing; wedging, throwing, trimming and glazing. Handbuilding and raku firing will be done by request.

    Bring your preferred cone 10 clay to the first session.

    CERAMICS WITH JANET
    Tuesday 9.30am with Janet Burner - All levels

    This class brings together students with varying degrees of experience in clay, who share a desire to be creative using hand building techniques and/or the potter’s wheel. Demonstrations will be given in each class. Individual artistic development is the class focus. High fire, low fire, and Raku firings will be covered. 

    Bring your preferred cone 10 clay to the first session.

  • INTERMEDIATE WHEEL THROWING
    Monday 8pm with DC, David Campbell - Intermediate

    Students are expected to have previous wheel throwing experience with some ability to center and create basic shapes like cylinders and bowls.  Demonstrations will be given in each class.  Individual artistic development is the class focus. Topics will include throwing bigger pieces, exploring complicated forms, creating sets, decoration, and glazing techniques.

    FINDING YOUR WAY WITH CLAY
    Saturday 9.30am with DC - Beginners

    Introduction to beginners to the basics of wheel throwing and offers experienced throwers an environment to deepen their skills. David will teach wedging, centering, basic shapes like bowls and cylinders, and trimming. Students are encouraged to sign up for at least 3 classes to gain an understanding of these skills. Topics may also include decoration techniques and glazing.

    FORM AND FUNCTION: A GOAL ORIENTED MENTORSHIP
    Sunday 1.30pm with Olivia Tuller - Previous clay experience is helpful, but all levels welcome

    This goal-oriented class focuses on creating functional wheel thrown ceramic pieces. Monthly project goals and demonstrations are offered so students can explore new techniques and forms. Students are also encouraged to suggest projects they want to undertake, to explore their own ideas, and execute personal goals.  

  • MAGICAL WONDERS OF PAPER CLAY
    Monday & Saturday 1pm with George Peñaloza - All levels

    Whether you're experienced with clay or a newbie, George will guide you though an exciting journey creating with paper clay. This class will build your sculpting skills and creative process. Paper clay is a versatile sculpting material for detail and complex construction. George will teach you the magic of underglazes and acrylics to create colorful surfaces and enchanting imaginative sculptures. Please purchase your own paper clay, available at Marjon’s.

    CERAMICS WATER FEATURES
    Thursday 4.30pm with Zach Gordon - Design and build your own ceramic fountain or bird bath - Intermediate (3), 4 weeks

    People have been making decorative water features for thousands of years. They appear in hospital gardens, parks, city plazas, and backyards and help create environments in which to relax, talk, or think. Because they target our senses of sound, sight, and touch, water features have the potential to be powerful art forms. Here’s your chance to design and create your own.

    ROOTED IN TRADITION
    Wednesday 5.30pm with Lisa Rooney - All levels

    This course focuses on exploring traditional handbuilding techniques to create functional and sculptural works. All experience levels are welcome. A minimum four week sign up is recommended for beginners to explore each of the building techniques including pinch, slab, coil, and combination styles. Focus will be given to advanced form building, relief carving, and artistry in the glazing process; experimenting  with slips, and various glaze,

    UNIQUELY UBIQUITOUS
    Friday 9.30am with YeRin Kim - All levels

    In Uniquely Ubiquitous, our main goal is to help you find your own style in working with clay. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced artist, we'll try out different techniques and materials to match your ideas and projects. Don't forget to bring your sketchbook so we can brainstorm and visualize together.

    ANATOMY & FIGURE MODELING FOR SCULPTORS
    Friday 5.30pm with Jesse Berlin. All Levels
    Duration: 4-8 weeks is recommended

    Students will learn a variety of skills including general human anatomy,  armature design, gesture, realistic skin texturing, and a variety of hand-building techniques necessary to create dynamic poses and gain a greater understanding of figural composition. Over a period of 4-8 weeks, students will learn to sculpt various sections of the body through quick studies.
